Logline

A girl had been abandoned by her parents, and in her loneliness as an ogre living to fight, she never thought her bonds with people and the feeling of love would have kept her in the human world. She grows stronger in combat, not as an ogre but as a human.

Planning Intention

The story takes place during a chaotic period in Japan, right after the Muromachi shogunate was established. It is a classic action story with a taste of romance, a Japanese sword, and a beautiful girl fighting against evil from an ancient time that had been sealed away.

Synopsis

Mina is the daughter of Doyo Sasaki, a powerful man also known as Basara Daimyo in the Muromachi shogunate. Her fate in the Sasaki family was to be born as an onikiri, one who defeats rampant evil spirits by being possessed by an ogre. But the power of the ogre is a double-edged sword; it can either destroy her or become her strongest weapon. Her father Doyo secretly wished that she would not awaken the ogre inside her, and left her as a child in the care of a former vassal in the Honda family. Mina doesn’t know of her father’s worries and grows up harboring a grudge against him for abandoning her. One day, she awakens her power as an onikiri. Doyo finds out about her power and takes her back to his house reluctantly, but to Mina, her father’s actions are a reflection of his oppression against her. Seijiro Honda of the Honda family, who is like a brother to Mina and acts as her protector, accompanies her and worries about the conflict between Mina and her father.

Around that time, the biggest evil in Japan, Emperor Sutoku, who had been sealed away far off in Sanuki, gains power from the blood and grudges of many fallen in a long-lasting battle and comes back to life. Emperor Sutoku seeks revenge with his close associates Minamoto no Tameyoshi and Minamoto no Tametomo, a father and a son who led an evil army against the people who sent the emperor away to Sanuki.

Meanwhile, Mina begins to feel strong evil power and strange incidents start to happen to her. Doyo locks Mina in his house, gives Seijiro a whistle called Kikoku to calm Mina’s power, and prepares to ambush the evil army coming towards them. While the two armies fight, Seijiro uses the Kikoku to keep Mina under control.

Doyo gets help from Oniami and unleashes his own ogre for maximum power to defeat the evil army, but in a split second, he gets shot with Tametomo’s arrow and dies. Hearing Tametomo’s scornful laughter after her father’s death awakens Mina’s ogre. Mina loses control and defeats Tametomo, but then points her sword at her ally, Seijiro. Even after being stabbed, Seijiro keeps calling her name which moves Mina and brings her back to sanity. With the warm thoughts of Seijiro, who had been by her side the whole time, and learning of the hopes of her father, Mina finally finds a way to live as an evil-fighting onikiri.
